Shares, also known as stocks, are an investment in an individual company. Buying shares mean you 'own' a part of that company. Share prices rise and fall in line with demand. If the value of your shares rise, you can choose to sell them at a profit. On the other hand, you could lose money if share prices fall.

Owning shares also entitles you to benefits such as receiving dividends and registering your votes in company activities.

To help, our impartial experts have selected ideas for a wide range of active and passive funds, investment trusts, and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The ii Super 60 selections are designed to suit all investors, while our ACE 40 list highlights the best-in-class ethical options.

Hedge Funds

An investment trust works in much the same way as a fund. It's a way to invest in a range of companies without picking individual shares. Like funds, trusts invest in a 'basket' of underlying assets such as shares, bonds or property. But unlike funds, they are structured as companies listed on the London Stock Exchange. Investors in a trust share in the capital gains (or losses) and in any income payments made. As a result, trusts have two values: the value of the investments held in the trust and its share price.

Why do people invest in trusts?

Investment trusts have various bells and whistles that investors can use to their advantage. These include ‘rainy day’ reserves, which have enabled the vast majority of trusts to weather the Covid-19 dividend drought. by either maintaining or increasing dividend payments to shareholders. Investors can also pick up a potential bargain when a trust is trading on a discount. Performance can be supercharged in rising markets by "gearing".

Investment trust performance can involve rather more ups and downs than funds, because of gearing and the effect of movements in the discount. But if you're invested for the long term, it is not worth worrying too much about short-term swings.

ETFs

Get insights and ideas on choosing ETFs for your portfolio. Our experts have selected a number of ETFs for our Super 60 investments and ACE 40 ethical list. You'll also find a range of other funds and investment trusts to suit your goals. ETFs - or exchange-traded funds - are investment funds that can be traded on stock exchanges in the same way as shares. Trading in ETFs is a way to track a broad basket of stocks using an index, such as the S&P 500 or FTSE 100.

Investors can also track a wide range of other asset classes such as bonds, property and currencies. To trade in commodities such as metals, energy and agriculture, investors can use ETCs – exchange-traded commodities – which work much the same way.

Why do people invest in ETFs?

ETFs are a simple way to invest in a wide range of companies without picking individual shares.

Exchange-Traded Products (ETPs) including ETFs, ETCs and ETNs track a wide variety of underlying investments, some of which may be complex in nature and involve leverage, shorting or a high degree of volatility. It is therefore important that you read the Prospectus or Fact Sheet (available on the issuers' websites) prior to investing and ensure that you understand how it is structured and the associated risks.

Tax laws may change. If you have any queries on taxation in relation to your investments please speak to a qualified tax adviser. Please remember, the value of your investments, and the income derived from them, may go down as well as up. You may not get back all the money that you invest.

Commodities

Commodities are the basic stuff of life: raw products that can be bought and sold around the world, often in bulk. They include things like oil, gold, wheat and coffee and even bananas! There are three main types of commodities: energy, metals and agriculture and food. Energy commodities include everything from oil, gas and diesel to heating oil for rural homes.

Metal commodities are made up of precious metals like gold and silver and, now hugely expensive, palladium and platinum. They also include base metals, used for hundreds of different industrial processes like copper, aluminium, nickel and zinc.

Food and agriculture commodities consist of all sorts of every-day foodstuffs from soya beans and wheat to live cattle. And they also include chemicals used for agriculture and non-food products like cotton and lumber.
