Capital Management

An investment trust is a type of fund set up as a company, so its shares can be bought and sold on the stock exchange. They aim to make money for their shareholders by investing in a portfolio of shares, property or other assets, chosen and run by the investment manager. When you buy a share you are buying a slice of the trust’s underlying portfolio.

You should only invest in investment trusts if you have the time and know-how to select and maintain a diversified portfolio to help reduce risk.

Our website does not give personal advice. Ultimately all investments and the income they produce can fall as well as rise in value so you could get back less than you invest. If you’re unsure where to invest, ask for advice.

Investments Portfolios

The portfolios are designed as a starting point, and whilst each fund is professionally managed, the overall responsibility for selecting and managing the portfolio rests with you. We will send you updates with our latest views on each of the component funds to help you with this.

  • Master Portfolios are designed to help you get started with building your own portfolio
  • There are five example portfolios depending on your aims and attitude to risk
  • The underlying funds
  • A generic term for a collective investment.

The portfolios are not personal advice - if you're unsure whether an investment is right for you, contact us for financial advice. All investments fall as well as rise in value - you could get back less than you invest. For this reason we suggest investing for a minimum of five years.

What is Portfolio+?

Portfolio+ is not personal advice. If you are unsure if it is an appropriate service for you or which portfolio is suitable for your circumstances, contact us for advice. As the value of investments can fall as well as rise, you could get back less than you invest. You should anticipate holding an investment for at least 5 years and not invest monies you may need before then. Tax rules can change and the benefits will depend on your circumstances. The service uses our sister company's funds.

Looking to invest, but prefer our experts to choose and manage the investments? Then Portfolio+ could be for you. Our six ready-made portfolios invest in a broad mix of assets across a range of countries and regions – helping to dilute risk while improving the chances of investing in the right places.

Portfolio+ offers simplicity, performance potential and a low minimum investment of £1,000. While the portfolios can be sold at any time, free of charge, they should only be bought as long-term investments.

How does Portfolio+ work?

Simply choose an existing account or open a new account, select whether you're investing for income or growth, and the level of risk you're comfortable with. All six portfolios consist of a number of HL Multi-Manager funds, which are managed on a daily basis. The HL Multi-Manager funds invest in a selection of funds within a sector, benefitting from instant diversification – by holding just a couple of multi-manager funds you will immediately be invested in 20, 30 or even 40 underlying funds and, consequently, the assets those funds hold.

Why use Portfolio+

Our featured portfolios are designed by our investment team to help you choose your investment approach. And it’s easy to do.

  • Straightforward – Simply select one of the six portfolios which best matches your investment goal and attitude to risk. These cater for the vast majority of investment needs, from saving for retirement to investing for a child’s future. We keep the portfolio on track – We will rebalance each of our portfolios twice a year to ensure they remain on their original track.
  • No extra cost – No additional charges for the management of your portfolio. You pay an ongoing charge for the underlying multi-manager funds and our standard HL Service charge of 0.45%. See our charges.
  • Transparent – See exactly how your investments are performing – online or via the HL app, 24/7.

Commissions

The annual charge for holding investments in an HL Stocks and Shares ISA is never more than 0.45%. Your dealing and other charges will depend on the investments you choose.

Deals previous month Dealing charge
0 - 9 deals £11.95
10 -19 deals £8.95
20 or more deals £5.95

The online share dealing charge is determined by the number of deals you placed in the previous calendar month. The tariff you pay in August, for example, will depend on the number of share deals you place in July, and we count deals placed across all the HL accounts held under the same client number.

Support
  • From basic to advanced investing, our guides have the information you need to manage your account.
  • Our useful forms allows you to apply for an account by post and transfer investments from another provider.
  • Calculators designed to save time and work out how much your investments could be worth.
Stocks

Whether you're new to investing or already an expert, you can choose your own investments with our Stocks and Shares ISA. A Stocks and Shares ISA is an easy way for you to invest free from UK tax. And although investing is best for the long term, you can withdraw your money whenever you need to.

What is a Stocks and Shares ISA? You can think of a Stocks and Shares ISA as a shopping basket. The investments you put in the basket are up to you, and the ISA shelters them from UK income tax and capital gains tax.

How much can I invest in an ISA? Each tax year (6 April to 5 April) there’s a limited amount of money you can put in ISAs. This tax year the ISA allowance is £20,000. Tax rules for ISAs can change and their benefits depend on your circumstances.

Open an HL Stocks and Shares ISA

Once you've decided to invest your ISA allowance, it takes less than five minutes to get started. You'll just need a debit card and your national insurance number to hand. Remember that your investments can go down as well as up in value, so you may get back less than you invest.
